EKONID and Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs enhance their cooperation in German standard Vocational Education & Training

Jakarta, February 7th, 2018 – The German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID) and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia establish a basis to intensify their cooperation in certain fields for the further improvement of the Indonesian Vocational Education & Training (VET).

By today’s signing of a “Declaration of Intent on a Partnership in Vocational Education and Training” at the public Indonesian vocational school SMKN 26 in Jakarta, both institutions aim to set a sustainable framework for jointly promoting and realizing a higher ratio of practical training in companies as part of vocational education and to enlarge the engagement of German and Indonesian companies in VET.

The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Rudy Salahuddin, Deputy Minister for Creative Economy, Entrepreneurship, Cooperatives and SMEs Competitiveness of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and Mr. Jan Rönnfeld, Delegate of the German Industry in Indonesia and Managing Director of EKONID, both signing the Declaration on behalf of their institutions. Further, the German Ambassador Mr. Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg, Mr. Purwosusilo, principal of SMKN 26 Jakarta, and several representatives of different Indonesian Ministries as well as of German and Indonesian companies participated.

Mr. Rönnfeld emphasized the importance of a more practical-oriented vocational education in Indonesia: “The comprehensive participation of companies as a conducter of the practical part in Indonesia’s VET is crucial for a qualification of young people that is more closely linked and matched to the needs of the Indonesian business labor market.”

EKONID, supported in its VET activities by the Skills Experts Program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs defined three areas of cooperation to more adjust VET in Indonesia to the labor market’s requirements in selective projects according to the German and Indonesian companies’ need of qualified staff:

German standard Dual Vocational Education in different professions in cooperation with public Indonesian vocational schools (pilot project: industrial mechanics program of SMKN 26 Jakarta), German standard vocational Training of Trainers (in German: Ausbildung der Ausbilder – AdA) and the encouragement of German and Indonesian companies to more participate in vocational training programs (company internship) of Indonesian vocational training schools. Further, the two signing institutions intend to elaborate improved framework conditions for German-Indonesian VET projects of companies in Indonesia.
