Waste Management - Shared Responsibilities Adoption in Indonesia and Abroad
Background
Indonesia produces 65 million tons of waste every year. In Jakarta alone, 10 billion pieces plastic bags that equivalent to 85 thousand tons of plastic bags end up in the environment per year. With an estimated recycling rate of 2-11 percent, about 60 million tons remain untreated and unutilized. The existing waste management system is inadequate.
The EPR approach has found its way into a local law since 2008. Article 15 of the Waste Management Law No. 18/2008 states that manufacturers are responsible for the disposal of their packaging and products that are not or are difficult to compost. Regulation No. 81/2012 states that the industry is required to use recyclable materials and to take care of the recycling of its packaging materials. The subsequent implementing regulation 75/2019, issued through the Minister of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), outlines a waste reduction roadmap for producers, including the consumer goods manufacturing industry, hospitality industry and the retail sector. Accordingly, by 2030 the presently generated amount of waste has to be reduced by 30 percent. Producers are expected to develop their roadmaps and get them approved by KLHK.
However, stakeholders have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the regulation. There are five main challenges which include issues on;
- collection,
- stakeholder coordination,
- financing,
- development of processing infrastructure,
- development of environmentally friendly packaging materials
In this regard, the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry & Commerce (EKONID), in partnership with the Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization (IPRO) and DKI Jakarta Provincial Environmental Agency (Dinas LHK), with a support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (Germany) will held a hybrid seminar titled "Waste Management - Shared Responsibilities Adoption in Indonesia and Abroad" on Thursday, September 22nd 2022 in hybrid format at EcoPark Tebet from 13.30 until 16.30 Jakarta time. The seminar will discuss the challenges that stakeholders are faced with when implementing an EPR approach and how these challenges can be addressed. Speakers will come from Indonesia and abroad to share experiences.
For that, we invite all stakeholders, including companies, associations, organizations, and government agencies involved in the waste management industry to attend and participate in this seminar.
