COVID-19 Regulatory Updates

Indonesia opens for business travelers and visitors

16/09/2021

The issuance of Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 34/2021, which took effect on September 15, 2021, allows certain groups of foreigners to apply for and obtain visa to enter Indonesia again as long as they have been completely vaccinated for COVID-19.

Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly has signed and issued Minister of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) No. 34/2021 on The Granting of Visa and Immigration Permits During the COVID-19 Pandemic Handling Period and Towards National Economic Recovery.

The regulation, which becomes effective starting September 15, 2021, also revokes the previous immigration policy laid out in Permenkumham No. 27/2021, which bans foreign visitors from entering Indonesia.

“Previously, Permenkumham No. 27/2021 stipulates that foreigners with visas cannot enter Indonesia, except for those holding work visas or diplomatic visas. Permenkumham No. 34/2021 reopens that access for foreign visitors who hold eligible visitation visas and, or, limited stay permit,” said Arya Pradhana Anggakara, Head of Public Relations and General Affairs at the Directorate General for Immigrations at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, as quoted from the Immigrations’ official website.

The regulation states that the decision to reopen the border was taken as the previous regulation no longer reflect the current COVID-19 situation in Indonesia, as well as in considering the need to support the country’s national economic recovery efforts.

Under the current regulation, visa applicants must fulfill additional requirements, namely a complete COVID-19 vaccination certification as well as a letter of willingness to comply with the prevailing health protocols in Indonesia. Applicants should also be equipped with a travel or health insurance. Those travelling without a travel or health insurance must have a letter stating their willingness to cover their own medical expenses should they become infected with COVID-19 when travelling in Indonesia.

Additionally, the regulation specifies that the government may bar entry of foreigners hailing from countries with high COVID-19 infection rates. Find the article in the immigrations official website here
