On June 4, 2025, German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Indonesia/EKONID) successfully held its Centennial Gala, commemorating 100 years of steadfast partnership between Germany and Indonesia. Hosted at the Kempinski Ballroom in Jakarta, the evening brought together high-level representatives from government, business, and the diplomatic corps to honor a century of economic cooperation and shared progress.
Founded in 1924, EKONID has grown into the largest European chamber in Indonesia with nearly 400 members. As part of the global network of German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs), EKONID operates in over 150 offices across 93 countries, serving as a vital bridge for German-Indonesian business relations and global investment.
The centennial celebration is not just a reflection of the past—it is a testament to the strength of current and future ties.
Over the past century, EKONID has played a pivotal role in advancing these ties through initiatives such as INDOGERMA (1979) and TECHNOGERMA (1999), two landmark trade fairs that solidified Germany’s presence in Southeast Asia.
The organization has also facilitated high-level political encounters between leaders like Chancellor Helmut Kohl with President Soeharto in 1995, as well as Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2012, among others.
Social responsibility has also been central to EKONID’s mission. In response to the 2004 tsunami, the Chamber coordinated EUR 6.5 million in aid through the INDOGERM-direct initiative, funding over 50 community projects in affected regions.
Gala Highlights: Celebration and Commitment
The Gala featured a historical exhibition, cultural performances, a signature dinner, and exclusive networking opportunities. The event not only celebrated EKONID’s achievements but also served as a platform to envision the future of German-Indonesian cooperation.
Under the patronage of H.E. Ina Lepel, the German Ambassador to Indonesia, the Gala spotlighted social impact through fundraising efforts benefiting the ISCO Foundation, a Jakarta-based NGO focused on early education and community development.
As part of the larger 100-year anniversary celebration, three memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) were also signed by EKONID and its partners:
- Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN): The MoU promotes collaboration in innovation, digitalization, and sustainability—reflecting a shared commitment to long-term economic growth.
- Indonesian Employers’ Association (Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia/APINDO): The renewed partnership focuses on promoting a conducive, competitive, and sustainable business climate, while encouraging international trade and investment.
- PT Astra International Tbk: A longstanding supporter of the German Dual Vocational Education and Training (GDVET) program, ASTRA is expanding its cooperation to help prepare Indonesians for employment opportunities in Germany.
“Indonesia is a burgeoning business destination with the largest and very dynamic economy in Southeast Asia,” said Peter Adrian, President of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), who flew from Berlin to Jakarta to attend the centennial celebration. “This moment is a great opportunity to strengthen and deepen our relationship.”
Jan Rönnfeld, Executive Director of EKONID, stated: “This centennial is not just a celebration of our legacy—it’s a declaration of intent for the future. We remain committed to growing alongside our Indonesian partners, deepening the mutual trust that defines our relationship.”
Prijono Sugiarto, Chairman of EKONID, echoed the sentiment: “We look back on a century of partnership with pride, and look forward to new opportunities in trade, innovation, and sustainable growth.”
