President Prabowo Subianto has called for a comprehensive restructuring of state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero), alongside faster implementation of Indonesia's 100 gigawatt (GW) solar power programme. The directive was issued during a meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on 14 October 2026.
The meeting was attended by Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani, and PLN's Director of Project Management and New Renewable Energy Suroso Isnandar.
According to Rosan, President Prabowo requested a review of PLN's business model and the preparation of a restructuring proposal. The government aims to improve the company's efficiency and productivity while reducing electricity subsidy costs.
The review will be carried out in coordination with Danantara Indonesia and PLN. It will also address the company's preparedness for emergencies and its ability to maintain reliable electricity supplies during disruptions.
The directive also covers the acceleration of Indonesia's 100 GW solar power programme, launched in August 2026. The programme aims to expand solar electricity generation nationwide, with an initial phase comprising 14 solar power projects with a combined planned capacity of 5.3 GWp.
These developments are relevant to companies involved in Indonesia's electricity and renewable energy sectors, including suppliers of solar technology, electrical equipment, grid infrastructure, and engineering services. Specific implementation arrangements and procurement opportunities have not yet been announced.
The government has requested that the relevant institutions prepare the restructuring proposal for further consideration by the President.
