Hybrid energy supply systems with PV and/or small wind incl. storage systems, biomass and hydrogen.

Background

Decentralized energy supply continues to be a central issue in Indonesia. While the energy supply in the Java-Bali region is largely provided by large and increasingly modern coal-fired power plants, other regions lack installed capacity and power grid as well as grid stability, so that power outages occur time and again or electricity is not available around the clock. In many of these locations supply by PLN (State Electricity Company) is not economical, which is why diesel generators are still frequently used to meet the need for electricity in small loads, especially for new remote areas or rural areas. Due to the country's fragmented island geography, it is a need for decentralized energy solutions.

Solar energy represents the energy resource with the highest potential of all existing energy sources in Indonesia, but it is still underutilized. Located at the equator, the average solar energy generation potential is 4.8 - 5.1 kWh/m2/day, or equivalent to 112,000 GWp/day in Indonesia. The greatest potential is localized in the eastern areas of the archipelago, which are only partially supplied with electricity by the PLN grid. There, the solar energy potential reaches values of up to 6 kWh/m2/day. Diesel generators are to be replaced or at least supplemented with PV systems. Small wind turbines are also of interest. A combination with PV systems can also be useful.

Indonesia Solar Potential Market. The number of customers who have installed Solar PV until March 2021 in Jakarta has reached 703 customers. The potential customer for using Solar PV in Indonesia is from the industrial and business sectors, as well as the household sector. The largest production capacity of solar panel manufacturers in Indonesia is 100 MWp/year while the smallest capacity is only 10 MWp/year.
