Background
The Indonesian government has set itself the goal of modernizing the country in a sustainable manner, placing greater emphasis on environmental and climate protection. A key role in this is played by the transformation of the energy and industrial sectors in line with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An essential part of this strategy is the increased use of local resources such as palm oil waste, rice husks, and used cooking oil, with the aim of establishing a responsible circular economy while strengthening energy independence.
North Sumatra plays a key role in this, particularly through the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone, which is developing into an important location for the development and production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). At the same time, a leading center for biogas is emerging in neighboring Langkat, benefiting from the region's extensive biomass potential.
A significant milestone was reached in January 2024 with the commissioning of Asia's largest compressed biogas plant – an important step for local value creation and the efficient use of agricultural residues for energy.
Based on this, there are several examples of German technologies that are needed, such as:
- Biomass processing and combustion
- Anaerobic digestion and biogas production
- Biogas processing and utilization
- Small-scale plants and off-grid systems
- Sustainable fuel production
- Monitoring and control systems
- Energy management and smart metering
- Energy storage (BESS)
- Grid integration and load management

Format
Indonesia has ambitious plans to promote sustainable energy supply and innovative technology solutions, particularly in the areas of bioenergy and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). As part of its national electricity supply plan, the country aims to increase the share of renewable energies in its energy mix to 35 percent by 2034.
The focus of this strategy currently includes the development of the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone and the expansion of regional bioenergy centers, such as in Langkat in northern Sumatra. These developments open up attractive opportunities for German companies to engage in a dynamic and future-oriented market.
As part of a delegation trip to Indonesia, we invite you to learn about current progress, potential, and opportunities for cooperation in these key areas and to establish valuable contacts with local stakeholders.
