Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs announced on 16 October 2026 adjustments to the implementation timelines for several product and service categories under the country's mandatory halal certification framework. The changes take into account the readiness of the halal certification ecosystem, businesses, industries and other stakeholders.
Under the announced adjustments, mandatory halal certification for food, beverages, slaughtered products and slaughtering services originating from abroad is scheduled to take effect from 18 October 2028.
For natural medicines, quasi-drugs, health supplements, cosmetics, chemical products, genetically engineered products, certain consumer goods and Class A medical devices, the transition period has been extended until 17 October 2028.
The transition period for micro and small enterprises in the food, beverage, slaughtered product and slaughtering service categories has also been extended until 17 October 2028.
Existing timelines for other product categories remain unchanged. These include 17 October 2029 for over-the-counter medicines and 17 October 2034 for prescription medicines, excluding psychotropics.
In addition to the timeline adjustments, the government announced that BPJPH Regulation No. 4/2026, concerning foreign halal products entering Indonesia, will be revoked. The regulation concerns requirements applicable to foreign halal products entering the Indonesian market.
The announced adjustments are expected to be formalised through an amendment to Government Regulation No. 42/2024 and related implementing regulations. As of 19 October 2026, the Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency (BPJPH), the implementing authority for halal product assurance, had not yet published a separate official statement on the implementation of these adjustments.
For companies operating in or exporting to Indonesia, the announced changes are relevant to product certification timelines and regulatory compliance planning. Businesses should continue reviewing the requirements applicable to their products and monitoring further official regulatory developments.
