Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau has disrupted air travel across parts of Java and Sumatra, prompting the temporary closure of several airports, including airports serving Jakarta.

According to the latest information from AirNav Indonesia, seven airports remain temporarily closed, with the current closure period estimated to remain in effect until 23:59 WIB on 7 September 2026:
- Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang (CGK)
- Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta (HLP)
- Radin Inten II Airport, Lampung (TKG)
- Husein Sastranegara Airport, Bandung (BDO)
- Budiarto Airport, Curug
- Pondok Cabe Airport, South Tangerang (PCB)
- Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas Airport, Pesisir Barat, Lampung
Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra, has reopened and is operating normally.
The indicated reopening times for the remaining airports are estimates and may be extended depending on volcanic ash conditions and aviation safety assessments.
Situation overview
Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, entered a period of continuous eruption on the evening of 4 September 2026. According to Indonesia's Geological Agency, the continuous eruption episode lasted approximately 25 hours and ended shortly after midnight on 6 September.
Further Strombolian eruptions have since been recorded, and authorities continue to closely monitor the volcano. As of 7 September, Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Siaga/Alert), with the Geological Agency assessing that the probability of further eruptions remains high.
Volcanic ash from the eruption has spread across a wide area. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that ash at lower atmospheric levels was spreading across parts of Banten, western and southern West Java, Lampung and Bengkulu, while ash at higher altitudes extended further west over the Indian Ocean.
Volcanic ash can pose a serious safety risk to aircraft. Airport and air navigation authorities have therefore adjusted operational restrictions as the ash cloud develops.
Airport closures remain subject to change
Eight airports were initially affected by temporary closures due to volcanic ash. AirNav Indonesia has stressed that airport status is being adjusted dynamically according to the development of the volcanic ash cloud and aviation safety considerations.
Travellers planning to fly to, from or through affected airports should therefore check directly with their airline before travelling to the airport. Even after an airport reopens, individual flights may remain delayed, cancelled or rescheduled as airline operations resume.
Safety precautions in areas affected by volcanic ash
Authorities have advised communities in areas affected by volcanic ash to remain calm and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
Indonesia's Geological Agency recommends that people exposed to volcanic ash reduce outdoor activities and wear a mask when outside to minimise the risk of respiratory irritation. Residents and visitors are also prohibited from conducting activities within a three-kilometre radius of Anak Krakatau's centre of activity.
People in affected areas are encouraged to continue monitoring information from official authorities, including the Geological Agency/PVMBG, BMKG, BNPB and local disaster management agencies.
