From 21 to 25 of September 2026, AHK Indonesia (EKONID) hosted a German business delegation to Indonesia focusing on geothermal technologies. The programme took place in Jakarta and West Java in collaboration with Renewables Academy (RENAC) and with the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE). Over five days, the delegation met geothermal developers and operators, public institutions, research organisations and financing institutions and visited several geothermal sites in West Java.
The programme began with a briefing at AHK Indonesia in Jakarta. Dr. Monika Erath, Executive Director of AHK Indonesia, opened the session. Ms. Angelika Farhan-Reimpell from the BMWE Coordination Office introduced the German Energy Export Initiative. Ms. Anja Nitschke-Hoffmann from the German Embassy and Mr. Oliver Döhne from Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) provided an overview of German-Indonesian relations and the Indonesian market. Ms. Tisa Septa Putri Prima and Mr. Muhammad Ariel Pratama from GIZ Indonesia then discussed Indonesia's energy transition and the role of geothermal energy and green hydrogen.
The delegation then visited PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), PT PLN (Persero) and PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero). At PGE, discussions covered geothermal project development, technology supply and specialist services. The meeting with PLN focused on capacity planning, grid integration, hybrid systems, grid stability and automation. At PT SMI, the participants discussed financing structures for geothermal projects, including blended finance instruments and funding options. The programme document identifies PGE as a major geothermal operator, PLN as both electricity purchaser and geothermal developer, and PT SMI as an infrastructure financing institution involved in geothermal development.
After the meetings in Jakarta, the delegation travelled to Bandung for the technical part of the programme. On Tuesday, September 22, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) hosted a workshop on innovation and policy conditions for geothermal development in Indonesia. The session brought together representatives from ITB, government institutions, the geothermal industry and the German delegation.
Prof. Ir. Lavi Rizki Zuhal, Ph.D., ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, opened the workshop. Welcoming remarks were given by Mr. Stephan Blocks, Head of Business Development at AHK Indonesia, Ms. Angelika Farhan-Reimpell and Prof. Ir. Ari Darmawan Pasek, M.Sc., Ph.D., Head of the ITB Center for New & Renewable Energy. Ir. Agung Pribadi, M.Sc., Head of the Centre for Mineral, Coal and Geothermal Resources (PSDMBP), presented an overview of Indonesia's geothermal roadmap.
The German company presentations covered technologies and services for different stages of geothermal projects, ranging from motor control, geoscience and electrical engineering to exploration, filtration and plant engineering. Representatives of AuCom MCS GmbH & Co. KG, PT Lahmeyer International Indonesia, geomecon GmbH, ELTEC Green Energy GmbH, Dango & Dienenthal Filtertechnik GmbH, Everllence SE and Siemens Energy contributed to the session. The workshop also included discussions on research cooperation, technology transfer and the development of specialised geothermal skills.
In the afternoon, the delegation visited PSDMBP, a technical unit of Indonesia's Geological Agency under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The exchange focused on geothermal resource mapping and working areas in West Java, as well as data access and risk considerations for project development. The day ended with a networking dinner with representatives of Indonesian companies and institutions.
Wednesday was dedicated to geothermal operations in West Java. The delegation first visited Star Energy Geothermal's Wayang Windu facility, where participants received first-hand information on geothermal power generation and plant operations. The programme included discussions on project structures, technology requirements and opportunities for technology providers.
The group then continued to the Kamojang Geothermal Field operated by PLN Indonesia Power. Discussions covered plant operations, efficiency improvements, operation and maintenance partnerships, retrofit projects and digital monitoring. The visit also included a tour of the Kamojang power generation facilities.
On Thursday, September 24, the delegation visited PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero) in Soreang and the Patuha Geothermal Plant. At Geo Dipa Energi, the group discussed the company's geothermal activities and possible areas of cooperation with the participating companies. The visit to Patuha provided further insight into geothermal facilities and project development, with discussions on drilling, project implementation, environmental management and the integration of technologies into geothermal projects. The programme concluded the West Java section with a visit to the Patuha facilities before the delegation returned to Jakarta.
The final day at AHK Indonesia was centred on an executive roundtable and a moderated closing workshop. The roundtable addressed Indonesia's geothermal project pipeline, technology requirements identified during the site visits and practical issues surrounding procurement, financing and local-content requirements. Participants also discussed possible pilot projects and follow-up activities.
The programme closed with a workshop moderated by Mr. Sascha Meyer, focusing on the findings of the delegation and the preparation of further cooperation and consortium formation within the German Energy Export Initiative.
The five-day programme allowed the participating companies to discuss geothermal development directly with Indonesian project developers, utilities, financing institutions, research organisations and government bodies. It also combined these meetings with visits to operating geothermal facilities in West Java.
